Root Canal Treatment: What Happens, Step by Step

By the Wellcrysta Dental team

A root canal is done when the soft tissue inside a tooth, called the pulp, is infected or badly inflamed.

Step 1: Examination and X-ray to see the shape of the roots and the extent of infection.

Step 2: Local anaesthetic, then a small opening is made in the top of the tooth.

Step 3: The infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped.

Step 4: The canals are filled and sealed. A crown is often advised afterwards to protect the tooth.

Many root canals are completed in one or two sittings, depending on the tooth and the level of infection.
